Celebrate Baishakhi Mela in London
The Bengali New Year, Baishakhi Mela in London will be an unmissable event.
As part of a ‘positive action’ package of the Tower Hamlets borough, the Olympic 2012 organisers have named Brick Lane as “Curry Capital 2012”.
Although being synonymous with the best curry houses in Great Britain, Brick Lane has long been considered to be a haven for Indian cuisine lovers and does not need an Olympic endorsement to carry off its title as “Curry Capital”.
Brick Lane offers much more than authentic cuisine in its commitment of recreating Bangladeshi culture in London. Jewish bagel shops, Indian sari silks and Indian artist’s studios are also proud residents of Brick Lane and its neighbouring streets.
Because of this unrivalled devotion to producing authentic Bangladeshi culture, it is appropriate that Brick Lane is the chosen venue to celebrate Baishakhi Mela, the Bengali New Year.
On 8 May 2011, Brick Lane, Weavers Fields and Allen Gardens will come alive in colour, music, rituals and flamboyance, as a pulsating and vibrant parade, bursting with traditional costumes, musicians and dancers stunning the crowds which are lining the streets, interweaved between real-life tigers and elephants, will cavalcade through London’s East End.

Amidst the traditional bridal ride, peacock boat, Bengali Tiger, street entertainers, and hundreds of musicians, bands and dancers, will be a comprehensive array of stalls, allowing the crowds to sample delicious famous spicy dishes such as Vindaloos, Baltis and Birianis.
This annual event is organised by Tower Hamlets council and, attracting a crowd of more than 100,000, is the biggest Bangla New Year celebration outside of Bangladesh.
This family-friendly event is free for everyone and is calling for local performers to take part in this year’s Baishakhi Mela to showcase their singing, dancing, drama, poetry and stand-up comedy talents, with a Bangladeshi heritage theme attached to an eagerly awaited audience.
