Chelsea football club was founded in 1905 and has spent most of its life in the upper echelons of the English league. Chelsea was crowned champions of England in 1955 and in recent times the club has been elevated to an elite European football team.
Comprising of some of the world’s best players, Chelsea FC is considered decidedly dangerous by the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus, A.C Milan and Manchester United.
Much of the club’s real good fortune came when a Russian billionaire, Roman Abramavich bought Chelsea from owner Ken Bates in 2003 for price tag of £140 million. Abramovich didn’t stop spending as he set about buying great players, wielding a buying power that even Manchester United could not match. Managers came and went and with the installation of Jose Mourinho success arrived at the club.
Fifty years after Chelsea had first won the League title they won it again in 2005 and then again in 2006. Other trophies quickly followed under different managers, including the coveted European Champions League trophy.
Chelsea is the only British club to have won all three major European trophies. Throw in a smattering of F.A cups, League cups and Charity Shields and it’s easy to see why the Chelsea fans have taken to Roman!
As if the success that Chelsea has enjoyed under Ambramovich’s ownership wasn’t enough the fans are now even more ecstatic as ‘The Chosen One’ Jose Mourinho returns to the club after his spells with Inter-Milan and Real Madrid.
Chelsea have always played football at Stamford Bridge, which was opened firstly to athletics in 1877. The ground was designed by Archibald Leitch who had also designed Ibrox and Hamden Park. The stadium was modernised in the Ken Bates ownership era. The work, which was completed in 2001, included two hotels, shops and an interactive attraction called “Chelsea World of Sport”.
These ventures, rather than generating income, were in fact a financial burden to the club and Abramovich (being a business man) dropped them as soon as he took over concentrating all efforts on the football club.
Go and catch a game if you can get a ticket but don’t be disappointed if you can’t get one because Stamford Bridge is usually packed to capacity. The power of Roman Abramovich’s wealth ensures that some of the most glittering and gifted players in the world play their game on the hallowed turf of Stamford Bridge.
