Reacting the 2012 London Olympics with the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park
On the last weekend of July 2013 the world’s top athletes will descend upon the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to lock horns with their fellow competitors. It is considered to be one of the best International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Diamond League meetings in the world.
Spanning three days of athletics from 26– 28July, the Diamond League meeting is to be held exactly one year after the superbly unique opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games took place. It is difficult to deny that the London 2012 opening ceremony was a day of creative ingenious and triumph for the whole of Great Britain, as the imaginative mastermind of Danny Boyle exploited the talents of David Beckham, the sleek notoriety of James Bond and the global respect for the Queen. If fact it is only right that we celebrate this remarkable British feat and year after it took place.
The Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games will mark a return of many of the champions from the 2012 Olympics to London. Athletes such as Mo Farah, who’s incredible double win in the Olympics thrilled the world and Jessica Ennis, who was propelled instant athletic stardom following her win in the heptathlon, will be, once more, rousing a London audience.
The Sunday will highlight the paralympians, who had an equally as successful and action-packed Games in London last year. Referring to this year’s Anniversary Games, Hannah Cockcroft, double Paraolympic gold medal winner said:
“There was a massive buzz at the Games last year and I’m looking forward to re-creating that again this year at the Anniversary Games. It’s a brilliant opportunity for us, as it gives us another major event to aim for and I can’t wait to get out in front of that crowd again.”
The final word goes to London’s Mayor, Boris Johnson, who said:
“We are already set to mark the anniversary of the tremendous London 2012 opening ceremony with the world’s finest athletes returning to compete in this great stadium this summer.”
