Where to find culture in London? Somerset House is just one of the many cultural venues in London and certainly needs to be investigated. Somerset House is a major arts and cultural centre over looking the Thames in central London.
The house was built on the site of an old Tudor palace, which was demolished after 250 years to make way for the magnificent building that stands on the site today. Somerset House has always been a multi-purpose building and over the years has housed the Inland Revenue, the Admiralty and the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, to name but a few.
Nowadays you can see gigs, take part in a variety of interactive workshops and visit art and photographic exhibitions at this impressive building. Throughout the summer and early autumn the emphasis at Somerset House is on cinema.
Some of the films that are being put on have never been seen before and delightfully rare and some simply have not been shown on television or the cinema for years, such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Kes is another film, which does not appear very often on television and this superb British film that will be shown at Somerset House up until 21st August.
In September this leading London cultural hub will host the London Fashion Weekend, which will see models, designers and fashion lovers from around the world ascend on London from 19 - 22 September.
In the wintertime Somerset House’s courtyard is turned into a huge ice-rink, where visitors and critics alike say it is one of the capital’s ‘must visit’ places during the winter.
Once again this proves the intense variety available at this majestic multi-use building on the Strand. You can even get hire rooms for functions here such as meetings and weddings.
Whatever is on at Somerset House during any particular month, this is a great place to find culture in London. You really can’t go wrong by heading down to the banks of the River Thames and entering this fascinating building. With art exhibitions, films, photography and fashion, it is safe to say that you will be busy for the whole day as you become engrossed with all manner of interesting paraphernalia at Somerset House.
